WP Ad Buttons plugin update
Written by Nico on August 6, 2009 – 4:42 am -I have just uploaded another update to the Ad Buttons plugin. No major changes, just a bugfix. People who where using the plugin might have noticed that the widget title couldn’t be changed. This has now been fixed and you can enter your own custom title in de widget screen. If you don’t specify anything, it defaults to ‘Sponsored Links’
The plugin has been downloaded 550 times since I uploaded it to the wordpress.org plugin repository. I have gotten quite a few nice feedbacks and some very interesting suggestions for improvement. Keep your questions and suggestions coming!
If want to give the plugin a try, head on over to the WP Ad Plugin page. Anyone who is already using the plugin can automatically upgrade to the latest version from the wordpress admin panel. I am working on a new release with some added features, so stay tuned!

Your plugin is exactly the kind of thing we were looking for, so thanks so much for creating it!
Just one question – although we have entered the relevant information and created ad buttons, they are not showing up on the ‘active’ or ‘inactive’ ads panel, or on our blog (we’ve put the widget on the side panel and do have ’sponsored links’ showing, just no ads). Are we doing something wrong?!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

How odd, I got an e-mail the other day from someone with the same problem. I don’t have the problem on my own blogs.
Which version of wordpress are you using? And what did you enter into the image field when creating the new button (your image has to be on your server, not on your local computer)

The plug-in looks straight forward. However, when I create an add and then go to the Activate Ad Buttons, there are no buttons listed at all. Sorry for posting here but I didn’t see a support forum.
Any suggestions?

Luke,
I just released another update that fixes the problem you are encountering. Please update to the latest version, disable the plugin and then activate it again.

Nico..thx. that works great.
When you have a chance, add a admin page where you can set global variables such as should clicks open in the same page or a new page, image parameters and bordering. Just a thought! Keep up the excellent work!
Finally, do you know a way I could put this inside a content item?

Good to hear that it all works now! A more advanced admin page is on my to-do list.
Showing ads in your content is not supported (yet) the plugin is purely a sidebar widget at the moment. I know there is a plugin that lets you create custom content tags which could be used to add a tag that contains ad_buttons(); it would however use the global variable of the number of ads to display, so on your site it would show another block of 6 ads. I’ve added your request to my list of things for future releases though, so I will definitely look into it.

I really liked the post on 10 wp plugins. I found I had some of them, but found 3 in particular interesting and needed. They are ad buttons, broken link checker, and automatic upgrade. thanks

Gene, that post is a little out of date. Automatic upgrade has since been incorporated into the wordpress core, so you don’t need a plugin for that any more.

Hi Nico,
Many thanks for the reply and also for the updated download. It’s all working brilliantly now!
Fantastic plugin, so thanks again for developing it.

Glad you like it! I’ve got a few more additions on my to-do list, so be on the lookout for updated versions.

Nico, sorry for posting in the other post when this should have gone here.
Cudos to the changes with the fixed 125×125 buttons, the fixed sidebar width and the changes for Adsense.
I don’t know exactly what happened on your last update but now I cannot get it to recognize and display some ad button images. I’ve resaved the images as JPG, PNG, TIF and GIF, re-edited the Ad-Button record and save but no luck. I’ve even tried to add the same button again but it still does not show the image. I’ve checked the URL of the images and they do display in another browser.
Here is a URL for a screenshot of what the Ad-Buttons edit screen looks like:

Any suggestions?

Nico,
I’m not sure exactly what is happening but I did check the source code of the page and the images are in the code, both on the admin pages for the Ad-Button maintenance screen and on the website pages. In fact, I can cut the code, paste into an HTML editor, click the preview and it shows the images.
So I checked the pages in IE8 and Chrome! WOW! It shows the images in those browser but in FireFox 3.0, some are not displayed. The strange thing is I can copy the url for the images that are NOT displayed, put in another FireFox browser tab and it displays the images.
Anyone have any suggestions?

It would be very strange if some images would not show while others would. The program simply loops through the stored records and shows them one by one in exactly the same way.
The only thing I could think of that could be an issue here is the location of the images, but I don’t think it is an issue in your case.
Come to think about it, I have seen the same thing happen on a totally unrelated page: a simple static page with nothing on it but one ‘coming soon’ image. I’ve uploaded a new image and all of a sudden it won’t show in firefox. Reloading the page with Ctrl + F5 shows it just fine, open it again and it doesn’t show the image. Looks like this is a firefox bug, might also be a caching issue on your pc or at your ISP. Try clearing your cache in firefox and see if that fixes anything.

Hi!
I have just installed the Ad plugin. Unfortunately, when i tried creating an ad for one of my clients, it doesn’t show up on the blog page as well as on the ad panel. I have already uploaded the image on our server but it still doesn’t show up. Any idea where I went wrong? ‘m no techie so I’m not really sure how to go about this.

Did you fill in the ‘Ad Button Image’ field correctly when creating the new ad? It should be the full url to the image you’ve uploaded (i.e. http://www.yoursite.com/image/adimage.jpg)
